How to Convert Hourly to Annual Salary

Converting an hourly wage to an annual salary is straightforward. Simply multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then multiply by 52 (weeks per year).

Formula: Annual Salary = Hourly Rate × Hours per Week × 52

For example, if you earn $20 per hour and work 40 hours per week: $20 × 40 × 52 = $41,600 per year

Converting Salary to Hourly Rate

To convert an annual salary to an hourly rate, divide the annual salary by the total number of working hours in a year (typically 2,080 hours for full-time work).

Formula: Hourly Rate = Annual Salary ÷ 2,080

For example, a $60,000 annual salary equals: $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 per hour

Understanding Pay Frequencies

  • Weekly: 52 paychecks per year
  • Bi-weekly: 26 paychecks per year (every 2 weeks)
  • Semi-monthly: 24 paychecks per year (1st and 15th)
  • Monthly: 12 paychecks per year

Frequently Asked Questions

How many working hours are in a year?

A standard full-time schedule is 2,080 working hours per year (40 hours per week multiplied by 52 weeks). Most salary-to-hourly conversions use this figure. If you take unpaid time off, your actual hours worked are lower, which raises your true hourly rate. The calculator above lets you change the hours and weeks to match your real schedule.

Should I convert my gross pay or my net pay?

Always start with gross pay, the amount before taxes and deductions, when converting between hourly, weekly, and annual figures. Tax withholding changes with your state, filing status, and benefits, so net pay is not comparable across jobs. Once you have your gross numbers, use our take-home pay calculator to estimate what actually lands in your account.

What is the difference between bi-weekly and semi-monthly pay?

Bi-weekly means you are paid every two weeks, which is 26 paychecks a year. Semi-monthly means twice a month, for example the 1st and 15th, which is 24 paychecks a year. Two months each year contain three bi-weekly paychecks, so the same annual salary produces slightly larger bi-weekly checks than semi-monthly ones. The pay frequency converter shows an exact side-by-side.

How does unpaid time off change my annual pay?

Salaried pay is usually unaffected by occasional time off, but for hourly workers every unpaid day lowers annual earnings. At $25 per hour, five unpaid days (40 hours) reduce yearly pay by $1,000. Lower the weeks-per-year value in the calculator above to model unpaid leave accurately.

Is it better to be paid a salary or hourly?

Neither is universally better. Salaried roles offer predictable income and often richer benefits, while hourly roles can earn overtime for hours beyond 40 per week. The right answer depends on how many hours you actually work. Our salary vs hourly calculator finds the break-even point for your situation.

How do I find a part-time wage as a full-time equivalent (FTE)?

Divide the part-time hours by full-time hours (usually 40) to get the FTE percentage, then apply it to the full-time salary. For example, 24 hours a week is a 0.6 FTE, so a $60,000 full-time role is worth about $36,000 part-time. Our part-time FTE calculator does this automatically.
